Meet Elizabeth Marhefka, a 91ֿ biology and premed student whose exceptional dedication to community service and academic excellence has earned her the prestigious 2024 Scholar of the Year Award from the Akron Regional Interprofessional-Area Health Education Center (ARI-AHEC). Her inspiring journey through AHEC’s Scholar’s Program showcases her passion for medicine and a commitment to community engagement.
According to Jiang, liquid crystal is a unique state of matter. It is an intermediate state with some of the properties of a solid and liquid. It flows like a liquid but has optical properties that can be ordered, like a solid. In other words, you can control how the molecules align, thus you can control how light passes through it.
What started with an interaction on X (formally Twitter) soon led to an opportunity of a lifetime—a chance to conduct oceanographic research alongside some of the industry’s most seasoned scientists and scholars... Tessin said. “It was truly infectious the passion that she had about a future in research and teaching. From that first conversation, I was determined to have her join us here at 91ֿ.”
In August, she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in geology and is now pursuing a Master of Science in geology at 91ֿ. “Being active in the geology department has led me to some amazing opportunities,” Rider said. “The geology department made me feel right at home.”
Congratulations to undergraduate student Bryce Stoltz who received an Ohio Space Grant Consortium Scholarship in Fall 2024 to work with Dr. Courtney Wagner. In collaboration with Dr. David Singer, the three are searching for magnetotactic bacteria within acid mine drainage samples from Mineral City, Ohio.

Unlike conventional labs, the outdoor aviary mimics natural environmental conditions, providing access to natural light, fresh air and varying microbial exposures, making it possible to study animals in conditions more reflective of their natural environments. The facility includes 11 rooms outfitted with heating, ventilation and advanced monitoring systems, including plans for AI-assisted behavioral tracking.
