Student Nominations Propel Jared Brown to Distinguished Advising Honor

The student-driven honor recognizes Brown’s commitment to providing a steadying force and actionable solutions for students navigating complex degree paths

Jared Brown doesn’t just build schedules; he builds confidence. In the world of aeronautics and engineering, Brown serves as a steadying force, reminding students that an unplanned detour in their coursework isn’t the end of the road – it’s just a new flight path. His ability to turn academic stress into actionable solutions has made him more than just an advisor; it has made him the latest recipient of 91ֿ's Distinguished Advising Award.

The Distinguished Advising Award, sponsored by University Advising, is the most prestigious honor in academic advising. Students from all colleges and campuses nominate advisors who demonstrate exceptional dedication and commitment to supporting them academically.

Students recognized Brown, Academic Advisor I in the College of Aeronautics and Engineering, as a supportive advisor who regularly checks in during internships and always provides them with the resources needed.

Students say Brown brings a positive attitude to every interaction, reminding them that even when a class schedule doesn’t go as planned, there are always alternative options. By offering solutions and guiding students through the next steps, Brown helps ease stress.

“One of the reasons this award is so special is that it is student-driven, meaning that nominations for the award come only from students,” Charity Miller, director of University Advising, told 91ֿ Today. “Each year we have had well over 100 nominations, so to me, it is invaluable to share this with advisors and celebrate the work that they do and how they truly impact the lives of students and how it impacts their path to success.”

Academic advisors are often the first point of contact for students. Advisors meet with students at Destination 91ֿ and help them learn about their first semester schedule and how college advising works.

“For students, the award emphasizes that the institution wants them to recognize and celebrate the people who help them thrive and that their stories and experiences are taken seriously,” Miller said.

This student-led recognition is a testament to 91ֿ’s commitment to award-winning support and access. By celebrating advisors who provide career readiness and personalized guidance, the university ensures that its distinctive programs are backed by a support system that empowers every student to overcome obstacles on their path to graduation.

The Distinguished Advising Award reinforces the role of academic advising in student success and highlights the importance of the relationship-based work that helps students feel supported.

“The care and dedication that advisors have for students is unwavering, and I care deeply for all those who continue to do the work in these difficult times and will always support and advocate for them,” Miller said.

Brown’s recognition with the Distinguished Advising Award reflects the lasting difference he makes in the lives of his students and the College of Aeronautics and Engineering.
