Student Spotlight: Kristen Davis

Meet Kristen Davis!

As she heads into her Senior year, Kristen took some time to answer some questions about herself and her special role in students' lives here at 91ֿ's College of the Arts. Alongside her studies, Kristen works for the Undergraduate Student Government as a Senator for the College of the Arts. Hear from her directly as she shares her experiences, interests and challenges!

“Being a Senator has made me focus more on other students' needs and not just my own. I’m constantly looking for new perspectives and ways to improve everyone’s experience.”

Major: Theatre Design, Technology and Production
Minor: Theatre Management
Graduation Date: Fall 2026
Hometown: Woodville, Ohio

What is the reason you chose your major?

I knew I wanted to do something creative and design related. I discovered theatre design when taking Art of Theatre for a Kent Core credit. I took some more intro classes and ultimately decided on my major a year and a half into college. I am very happy with my major and don't think I would've discovered it without the Exploratory program.

In your time at 91ֿ, what are some accomplishments you are proud of?

I am naturally very introverted and struggle to make friends. I pushed myself outside of my comfort zone and got into leadership. This allowed me to grow my confidence and make lifelong friends. I am also proud of my work in the shows I've done. Every show I've worked on had its own set of challenges that have made me better.

What clubs and organizations are you involved in on campus?

I am currently the Undergraduate Student Government's Senator for College of the Arts. I'm also involved with the Student Success Programs on campus. I have been a Peer Success mentor three times and a Peer Success Academy trainer twice. I was also an orientation leader for the last two summers.

What led to your decision in running for Undergraduate Student Government Senator for the College of the Arts?

The election commissioner last spring reached out to me about running for the position. I did some research into what the USG senators do and decided to go for it.

How has being a Senator affected you personally?

This was a big challenge for me. I’m constantly pushing myself outside of my comfort zone personally and professionally to ensure I’m doing the best job possible.

Are there any challenges that come with being Senator?

The biggest challenge for me has been navigating the four schools within the college of the Arts. I want my initiatives to have a positive impact on everyone, not just one school. I’m currently looking for a few people from different majors within the arts to join my committee and help me with the disconnect between schools.

How has your school or program made a difference to you?

91ֿ has allowed me to embrace who I truly am. I used to be afraid to be myself because of what others might have thought of me. I now care much less about others' perception of me and more about my own and others happiness. I also was able to find a career field that I love and knew nothing about when I started here.

My program allows me to learn through doing. Every step of the way I have received guidance, and I was not shamed for my mistakes. I feel like I have been given the opportunity to learn "how" and not just the "what." I have also learned how to advocate for myself to get where I want to be.

What are things you love about 91ֿ, your major or your school?

I love the community at 91ֿ. There's a welcoming and accepting environment all around. I also love how the staff here genuinely cares about our success. I enjoy what I get to do every day and that's how I know I'm in the right place.

What has been your favorite class at 91ֿ?

The Peer Success Academy is my favorite class. It taught me so many valuable skills that I use every day. My favorite major specific class is my Practicum because I get to work on shows or any class taught by Jeff Polunas.

What is your best memory at 91ֿ?

A late-night study session and game night with my friends. We all did our work together and when we needed a break we would play a short game.

What is your favorite part of working on campus?

Most of the jobs I've held have allowed me to make connections with students that I probably would never have met outside of work.

Do you have advice for others?

Push yourself outside of your comfort zone. That's how you'll learn and grow.
